A Nongovernmental Organization, Dar Al Andalus Centre has organized a Three-Days Workshop for Journalists and Media Chiefs across Adamawa with a charged on them to uphold Peace building approach in their reportage.
The workshop which held at Dantsoho Hotel Yola, featured presentations of Humanitarian Reporting, Sharia Intelligence, Constructive Alternative Narratives and the Role of Journalism in the Prevention of Extremism and Violence.
Essentially, the Three-Day workshop sought to among other reasons realign the minds of people on the unwholesome ideology of some bad elements who tend to associate Islam with cruelty by their professions and activities.
Speaking in an interview with journalists, the Programme Manager, Malam Jafar Isa explained that the workshop was organized for journalists in view of their critical role in information dissemination and ability to positively influence the people through their reportage.
He pointed out that the negative activities of the perpetrators of crime and criminality in the name of Islam has created bad impression on the main stream religion hence the decision to engage journalists in constructive countering of the narratives.
Malam Isa who challenged the participants at the workshop to appropriately apply the knowledge acquired in their reportage, described Islam as a Peaceful religion.
The Programme Manager therefore, appealed to Nigerians to coexist peacefully with one another irrespective of their religious, ethnocultural, economic and social differences.
In his presentation, one of the resource persons, Doctor Abubakar Alhassan dwelled on peace journalism in the era of violence where he counselled journalists to champion the course of peace in the society using their respective mediums while reporting.
He urged them to always work within the confines and ethics of the rule of engagement in their profession emphasizing on fairness, accuracy and facts.
On his part, Mr. Aliyu Dawobe who extensively spoke on Humanitarian Reporting advised journalists to always prioritize the perspective of the victim in am event of disaster with a view to facilitating succor for them from donors and other actors rather than focus on the incident.
He tasked reporters to be less concerned with the perpetrators i their reportage while wearing in mind the safety and wellbeing of the victims.
Among other speakers at the workshop were Dr. Isa Mansur who harped via zoom on the Sharia Intelligence and Doctor Bala Mohammed with Aternative Narratives.
Questions and answers as well as presentation of certificates to then participants featured.
